Jailhouse Jock

So two more tournaments have passed us by the Portugal Masters down in Vilamoura  and the Castello Masters at Sergio Garcia's home golf club. No surprise who won that one then, however in Portugal Alvaro Quiros the Spaniard won in convincing fashion. Alvaro is the longest hitter on tour and probably the liveliest character to go with it and another exciting up and coming young player.

Two more cuts made is nothing to shout about but as always there were some positives to take from it all especially in Spain where I started to drive the ball really quite well again which hopefully will help me out at our final tournament, the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

Raymondo, my fathe,r was present in Spain last week with his pals Roy the Dark Knight, Old Man John and Jumbo which was a good job as I think they were about the only spectators for the first two days. Its funny how we think of Spain as such a strong golfing nation with all the superstars it has produced over the years but the game really has not reached the general public as much as you might have imagined. Still there were a good few in to watch the local hero Sergio win at home as you would expect.

The bigger story for me though on the final day of the regular season is at the other end of the Order of Merit when the battle to keep your tour card comes to an exciting or nerve jangling finish.

I played with my good friend Sam Little on Saturday which meant that having made the cut his playing privileges were secure for next year.  One man to fall just short was another friend from my amateur days Gary (Witney) Houston. After a strong final month of the season which gave him a good chance of survival he fell short in the end meaning another trip to the last chance saloon, the Qualifying School in a couple of weeks time. Tough way to earn a living this if you are at the wrong end of the rankings.

The Jockey has had a month off the gym and is starting to look like a normal person again, maybe even John Daly will be changing his views about him if this carries on any longer. He was starting to find the bag a little heavy last week though so I would imagine he will find his way back into the gym as soon as he can.

There is one little incident to mention about the Jockey from last week though, one I know he is not to pleased to be aired in public as he is not too sure how to tell his Mum, so Mrs Mumford if he has not told you yet I do apologise.

On Wednesday I arrived at the club to be ushered into the tour office to be told that the Jockey was in jail. Excellent news was my first reaction thinking it would give me something to write about, then the realisation that I would have to find another caddy for the week hit home but I instantly realised that as my good pal Kevin was around for the week that was not a problem, I could then continue to be amused at the Jockeys' predicament.

Apparently a clerical error for a minor driving offence some years back led the Spanish police to search for the elusive Senor Jockey for some time and they eventually caught up with him in Valencia. Unfortunately they cleared the matter up quickly and the Jockey made his tee time but fortunately news of his time inside spread quickly and the whole Tour were able to take the mickey out of him.

This incident did not seem to leave any mental scars though as when we arrived on the first tee for our Pro Am the Jockey was more concerned about the fit of his bib again than the fact he had just been incarcerated.

I am sure he is considering asking a tailor to design a more slim fit, figure hugging bib for himself so that he feels more presentable. I think he should consider not caring about the fit of his bib and staying out of jail - but maybe he is right and I am wrong.

Back to golf then, Valderrama beckons this week, the final event of the season and the final Volvo Masters, the end of an era you could say. I have had my moments there over the years, with my best experience being two years ago when I had the opportunity to win the Order of Merit on the final day. I fell just short in the end as we know but I will always remember trying to hole my seven iron at the last to give myself a chance. High excitement and great memories.

I just hope that I can create some new memories this year, maybe even a win to sign off the season with. As the Jockey knows you never know what is around the corner, lets just hope it's a win not a couple of Spanish coppers.
