Wild Bill's Hiccups Cured

Posted: 5th June 2008

Sorry everyone, its safe to say I have been really lazy of late and five weeks of no blogging is totally unacceptable. Consider myself reprimanded and please know that I vow not to be so lazy again.

So what has  been going on during these past few weeks.    Golf wise it has not been worth writing about. Tired and jet lagged after China I decided to take an extra week off and wait until Ireland to return to competitive action.  This resulted in missing the cut by one shot after making a hash of the last two holes.

Wentworth started promisingly and ended in disappointment with a terrible weekend performance to finish at the back of the pack and then we headed to Wales only for the complete opposite to happen, I will touch on this more later.

The Jockey has been on at me for months to invest some of my hard earned cash on the ultimate golf gadget, a device called a trackman that records all your shots on the range, tells you how far each shot has gone, how far off line it was and all sorts of other useful information.  Naturally I ignored him for the best part of six months until I could take no more. Investment was duly made and smile was firmly put on Jockey's face, along with mine when in only a couple of minutes we both felt like a kid at Christmas with a new toy.

In only two weeks we have already found a fantastic new driver, a Cleveland Hi Bore Excel, and nearly led the driving accuracy stats in Wales which for Wild Bill is quite a turn around I am sure you would agree.

Sometimes I think that I should take more notice of the Jockey, listen to his advice a little more often and put more faith in him. So I made a mental note of this and listened intently to him on the Wednesday of Wentworth when he said, "Howeller do we have any safety pins in the bag?" "No" I replied, "sorry pal, what would you like a safety pin for buddy?" "I need two to make my bib a tighter fit, I have people coming to watch tomorrow and I want to look my best, maybe Emily could buy a needle and thread and take it in at the sides for me tonight". I am not sure what was funnier, the fact that The Jockey was worried about how the bib fitted, or that he thought that Emily might be able to use a needle and thread.

The PGA at Wentworth was of course a home tournament so Emily and I had a houseful of guests for the week, Ten on Saturday night in all and the house looked like a student doss house with people everywhere on blow up beds, the only thing lacking was the half eaten kebabs and empty beer bottles. There probably would have been I guess had it not been for the fact that I had to tee off at 8 am. Twice Emily's friends have come to watch me over the years, both times I have played at 8 am on Sunday morning, both times in the pouring rain, finished nearly last and been home looking miserably by midday. I am pretty sure that they cannot work out exactly why I earn such a decent living. I am still trying to convince them all that golf can be exciting but I don't think they believe me and next time I know they will have those kebabs anyway.

So what happened in Wales then. Well I set off with high hopes on Thursday even though I had not played all of the new holes as the pro am was cancelled after six holes because the Welsh weather lived up to its reputation. You may well know that the course has been redesigned specifically for the 2010 Ryder Cup. So off I went feeling good about my game, new driver in bag, really sure about my yardages after doing lots of work on the Trackman, coach Jamie pleased with my swing, Jockey feeling great in his slim fit bib, huge Swindon based support group loyally following my every move. And boy did I make a move, straight to last place inside two hours when I turned in 6 over par, on an easy day, on an easy course. Brilliant.

Now this did not bode well of course especially in these trying times that I find myself in so you can imagine how delighted we all were when a 66 on Friday snuck me through to the weekend on the mark. Two more scores in the sixties left me in 35th place overall, a good week in the end I guess.

So now we have headed to Austria to the fantastic Fontana Golf Club just outside Vienna where the sun always shines and I have just written this on Thursday morning as the whole day has been cancelled due to rain, as was Wednesday, oh and as was Tuesday. Welcome to the European Tour.
