Rory Edged Out In Hong Kong

To hit two threes in a play off, you can't beat that. It was not meant to be but it still has been a great week for me. I couldn't have done much more.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy was beaten in a play-off by Lin Wen Tang at the second extra hole in the UBS Hong Kong Open at Fanling.

McIlroy played a career-best hook shot to the green from the trees giving himself a good chance of the title on the 18th hole after making birdie at the first time of asking. Lin, on the fairway from his drive, hit his second shot to a foot and holed the putt for a birdie to clinch the title. Rory made par and had to settle in a tie for second place alongside the third member of the play-off group, Francesco Molinari. All had finished on fifteen under par for the four rounds of regulation play.

Whilst it was McIlroy's second play-off in recent months, the first being in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, he wasn't overly disappointed with his performance. "To hit two threes in a play-off, you can't beat that. It was not meant to be but it still has been a great week for me. I couldn't have done much more", said McIlroy, "I didn't back off and I didn't make any stupid mistakes. I'll take all the positives. As long as I can keep putting myself in these positions and feeling the nerves and adrenaline, I'll know I'm doing things right and I'll be able to pull through sooner or later".

This performance gives Rory 50th spot in the Official World Golf Rankings and puts him in 5th position in the European Tour Race to Dubai.

Richard Sterne had a good week finishing in a tie for 6th position and India's Jeev Milkha Singh, coming off his fine win in Singapore last week, finished tied 11th.
