Q.

Hi David, I'm glad to see you getting back to playing regularly.  My question is kinda tough.  Two years ago you were in the Top 10 in the world.  Then you suffered with injuries and moved down the rankings.  Lee Westwood says he got rid of all his coaches, gurus, advisors etc and stuck with just one.  You seem to be accumulating a huge entourage of people and I wonder if this is just complicating your game, your mindset and your life.  What are your thoughts on getting back to basics and streamlining your organization?  I am so looking forward to seeing you in the winners circle again where you belong.
Very Best Regards.
ANDREW JACOBS

A.

Hi Andrew, thanks for your concern mate. I know it may look that way however all I have done is switch my old coach Clive tucker for  my new one Jamie Gough. I feel like I do need a coach, however we are keeping things really simple at the moment which is great. Everyone has their own way of doing things and Lee says he has no coach, well he does work with mark Roe on his short game and takes advice on his putting as well so it's only his long game that he does by himself and that has always been his strong point.  Fingers crossed I will be on my way back up the rankings soon. Best wishes, Howeller.

Q.

Hi David I walked round with the scoreboard on Sunday in the wind at The London Club and was surprised by how well you were able to cope with the difficult conditions. Your short game especially was immaculate - What advice would you give to a high handicapper to cope with such adverse weather conditions.
BRIAN JOHNSTON

A. Well Briam you would have to be mad to play in those conditions for fun mate. I never saw anything wrong with being a fair weather golfer. However the best advice is just to enjoy the challenge for what it is and remember that all your mates will be losing their heads while you keep yours will mean they will have to buy you lunch for once. Thanks for volunteering, we appreciate your efforts to make the tournament that much better for all. Cheers. Howeller.

Q.

Hi David, firstly congrats on your Open performance and being No1 in the putts per GIR stats on the PGA European tour. My question is about the mental side of the game. Specifically putting. I'm freezing over my putts, unable to take the club back. When I do take it back it's in a series of jerks. Consequently I hardly ever hole any putts in the 10 foot region. I'm shooting mid 70's but coming off the course frustrated because I know I've left 2 or 3 shots out there. Any tips?. Am I a lost cause?  P.S. Just bought a Cleveland Hibore XLS driver. Great club.
GARY PARKS

A.

Gary, my only advice would be this, firstly place the putter a quarter inch behind the ball when you set up so that you can see a small patch of grass. When you stroke the putt keep your eyes trained firmly on the grass, not the ball and definitely not the putter head. Make your stroke knowing that all you can do is try and roll the ball on your intended line, and focus on that patch of grass until you finish your stroke. On a 3 or 4 foot putt you should only hear the ball drop into the hole. If you see it drop in or heaven forbid slide past the hole then you have looked up too fast. On the mental side it sounds like you need to accept that the worst that can happen is you miss the putt mate, and that you probably will, the percentages of putts holed from ten feet is pretty small, even from the best putters in the world on fantastic greens so there is no point in your good self getting nervous!! Good luck and let me know if that helps. Cheers Howeller.

Q.

David, being arguably the best putter on tour can you give me some tips regarding putting, I seem to take the club away on the outside therefore come back on the inside meaning lots of three putts which ruins my round.
PHILIP CHESWORTH

A.

My advice would be this, go to davepelz.com and buy a putting string which should only cost around ten pounds, and then try this drill. Set the string up on a straight putt. At around four feet push a tee peg in the ground directly under the string and I mean exactly under the string, be precise about it. Place the ball in front of the tee peg and get used to getting your eyes exactly over the middle of the ball at address. This should also help your aiming.. Moving on from this using the centre line on your putter as a guide move the putter back about 5 inches with the line directly under the string still and place another tee right at the toe of the putter but don't push this one in all the way. Do the same for the thru swing. If you hit the tee on the backswing obviously you have taken it on the outside. Give it a try you can also put tees on the inside to create a pathway for the club head. You need to leave some leewau of course but too much in would be best for you. Cheers and good luck, Howeller.
